WHY WE USE SOY-COCONUT WAX

WHY WE USE SOY-COCONUT WAX

When it comes to selecting the ideal wax for crafting delightful scented candles, there's a plethora of options to choose from. The core of the discussion often revolves around soy-coconut wax blend vs. paraffin wax. Which wax stands out? Which candle should you opt for?

SOY-COCONUT WAX BLEND VS. PARAFFIN WAX

It's a daring claim to label one wax as “superior” to another. Both soy-coconut wax blend and paraffin wax possess distinct characteristics that make them suitable for varied candle crafting purposes. Ultimately, candles made from either wax are safe to light up, provided they are crafted correctly.

Paraffin wax originates from petroleum or crude oil, emerging as a byproduct during the oil purification process. This wax has traditionally found its place in candles, food items (like apple coatings), and household products (such as drywall, wax paper, and crayons).

In contrast, the soy-coconut wax blend is a fusion of hydrogenated soybean oil and coconut oil. While soybeans undergo a refining process to transform into oil and subsequently, wax, coconut oil is derived from the kernel of mature coconuts.

Both paraffin wax and the soy-coconut wax blend are deemed non-toxic. From a sustainability and "all-natural" perspective, the plant-based soy-coconut wax blend certainly has an edge over the synthetic paraffin wax.

Candles made from the soy-coconut wax blend also boast several significant benefits, including:

  • Enhanced scent retention
  • Extended burn duration
  • Reduced soot production

SOY-COCONUT WAX BLEND RETAINS SCENT LONGER THAN PARAFFIN

Typically, the fragrance oils that exude your cherished aromas will persist longer in a soy-coconut wax blend candle compared to a paraffin wax candle.

The soy-coconut wax blend exhibits a higher molecular density than paraffin wax.

Waxes with a dense molecular structure have demonstrated superior scent retention over extended durations compared to their lighter counterparts. This is attributed to the difficulty faced by fragrance molecules in escaping from denser waxes.

To put it simply, while the aroma from a paraffin candle might diminish noticeably with time, a soy-coconut wax blend candle will consistently radiate delightful fragrances for a more extended period.

SOY-COCONUT WAX BLEND CANDLES BURN LONGER

Owing to its denser nature compared to paraffin, the soy-coconut wax blend demands more energy to melt.

Consequently, candles made from the soy-coconut blend tend to burn at a more leisurely pace than those made from paraffin, allowing you to relish their glow for extended durations.

However, several other elements influence the burning speed of your candle, such as its dimensions, wick size, and the additives in the wax.

Yet, when all other factors remain constant, candles crafted from the soy-coconut wax blend tend to last about 30% to 50% longer than their paraffin counterparts.

SOY-COCONUT WAX BLEND PRODUCES MINIMAL SOOT

All candles, regardless of their make, will produce a minor amount of soot upon burning. Over time, this soot might tarnish your elegant candle jar with a dark hue. In severe instances, soot can even stain drapes and walls.

However, when a soy-coconut wax blend candle and a paraffin candle are lit under identical conditions, the paraffin candle is more likely to emit a greater amount of soot.

A study conducted in 2002 on the combustion characteristics of soy wax candles revealed that paraffin generates considerably more soot than soy wax. By extension, the soy-coconut blend, with its soy component, is expected to produce less soot than paraffin.

Moreover, the soot from soy-coconut wax blend candles is often paler and less conspicuous than that from paraffin wax candles.
